Monitoring of accessibility of healthcare services begins in Juvenile Correctional Facility

GCRT, Ministry of Corrections and Legal Assistance of Georgia and Open Society Georgia  Foundation are starting a joint project. Memorandum of understanding was signed on March 11th. 

 

The project is financed by Open Society Georgia Foundation and aims to explore (look at) the accessibility of medical services in Juvenile Correctional Establishment. As a result the existing gaps and needs in the establishment will be identified. The monitoring will last 6 months. Through the research it will be revealed how are the rights of prisoners as patients respected; to what degree is the health service accessible for them, is the quality of medical assistance adequate and how are the issues of public health epidemiology and clinical medicine organized.

 

After the end of the project recommendations will be prepared. These recommendations will contribute to the improvement of the health care services in the facility.


Enamel Exhibition 2010

On January 30th  2010 GCRT and Fine and Applied arts center of Ilia Chavchavadze State University organized an exhibition of enamel works of Convicted Juveniles. 11 juveniles participated, and 3 of them were able to attend the exhibition. Rector of Ilia Chavchavadze State University Mr. Gigi Tevzadze opened the exhibition and together with Minister of Penitentiary, Probation and Legal Aid Khatuna Kalmakhelidze handed out the certificates.

ALUBLOBA 2009

As well as last year, with support of GCRT professionals 3 juvenile prisoners participated in the literary contest Alubloba. One of them was able to attend the award ceremony, which took place on December 20th 2009. Participants received books as presents and the work of one of them was published in “Alubloba 2009”.

UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

On June 26 GCRT  commemorated the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. In the morning GCRT attended the conference "Together Agains Torture" organized by Public Defender of Georgia and "Empathy", the Rehabilitation Centre for Victims of Torture which was held in Sheraton Metekhi Palace. GCRT was one of the the co-organizers of the conference. After the conferecne GCRT and Human Rights Centre held silent gathering to support the victims of torture  in Vera Park, followed by film and book presentation by GCRT in the Literature cafe. The book-album  "My name is. . . " presented at the cafe is about personal stories of GCRT's clients, both in English and Georgian languages. GCRT also presented a short animated film "Reflection" about the topic of torture.    

      

At the Public Defender’s office, GCRT Batumi branch office organized event, where the representatives of human rights NGO-s, governmental sector and local media participated. Staff from Tbilisi Central office also attended the event. Participants underlined importance of this day, prevalence of torture despite of its prohibition by the International Law, and its devastating effects. The attendants saw an animated film “Reflection” made by GCRT, GCRT Batumi also presented a book “My name is…”. Then the discussion took place around the presented material, participants discussed several torture cases, which occurred in the region.

The above mentioned book was distributed among participants, together with judicial and informative literature.

The event and the animation film were broadcasted through the local TV channel.

Kutaisi branch office also conducted an event at the Public Defender’s office. Different NGO-s and representatives of governmental sector and media participated in the event. Staff from Tbilisi Central office also attended the event. The book and film were presented to the participants. One of the clients participating in creation of this book wished to take part and attended the event.

After the presentation of the book and the film there was a discussion on topic of torture. The event was broadcasted through the local TV channel.

International Conference: “Post-Emergency Responses: an Integrated Approach to psychotrauma”

October 17-18, 2008 in Tbilisi

 

The conference aimed to provide a high-quality, professional exchange forum for participants for discussing the past and recent experiences in traumatic stress field, ways of responding to acute crisis following August military actions. The conference offered a comprehensive overview of evidence-based interventions currently available for those affected by disasters both in emergencies and the long-term perspective.

GCRT's work with Survivors of War

As a result of military conflict in Georgia tens of thousand remain internally displaced apart from this many returnees face severe traumatization. GCRT’s efforts are aimed at providing effective psychological, medical social and legal assistance to those affected. GCRT works in 12 community centers in Tbilisi, Rustavi and Kutaisi (around 1300 IDPs) and in Gori refugee camp (around 1800 IDPs).
GCRT Calls for Help

On 7th of August the escalation of Georgian and breakaway region South Ossetia conflict grew into the Russian-Georgian war. Many villages and cities were devastated. At this point around 30 000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) are spread over the Georgia and the number is permanently increasing. Georgian government reports to have around 1500 wounded in Tbilisi hospitals only; most of them are civilians, among them children.

GCRT Commemorates 26th of June – UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture

As every year GCRT on 26th of June carried out various activities in support of victims of torture. This year GCRT was able to conduct those activities in Tbilisi, Kutaisi and Batumi at the same time. In Tbilisi various NGOs gathered in Vera Park, distributed leaflets, balloons and T-shirts with anti-torture message.

Juvenile Inmates from now on will have an enamel studio

GCRT with the financial support of Penal Reform International, NORLAG and in cooperation with Ilia Chavchavadze State University is setting up an enamel studio in juvenile correctional facility.

GCRT opens its new branch in Batumi

From now on GCRT has a new branch in Batumi and it can offer medical, psychosocial rehabilitation and legal counseling to Batumi and Adjara residents. On December 14 2007 in hotel “Inturisti” GCRT Batumi Branch opening was held.

“Alubloba” _ Juvenile Inmate’s Dream Comes True

With support of GCRT professionals Aleksandre Magalashvili decided to participate in the literary contest Alubloba and won the nomination “Best Debut”. Aleksandre attended the awarding ceremony and received presents: DVD player, books etc.
